12 Step Integration: Evidence-Based Support for Long-Term Recovery

At Borden Cottage, we believe in the power of the 12 Step approach. Rooted in the enduring traditions of Alcoholics Anonymous and other programs, it offers meaningful support for individuals seeking lasting recovery. Our clinical team and support staff introduce our residents to 12 Step principles and help them begin to experience the transformative benefits of this proven path.

A Complement to Clinical Care

Residents are encouraged to explore the 12 Step model through meetings on and off campus, engagement with the recovery community, and early step work under the guidance of the clinical team and local sponsors. Our staff creates a welcoming environment for newcomers, helping to demystify the process and foster meaningful connection with the spiritual and practical aspects of the program.

Backed by Research

A comprehensive 2020 Cochrane Review found that 12 Step-based approaches were more effective in promoting continuous abstinence than cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) or motivational enhancement alone. The improved outcomes endured over several years, too, the study found. The research group examined 27 studies, comprising 10,565 participants. The Cochrane Review adds to a large body of evidence that affirms what millions in recovery already know: the 12 Steps offer not only a roadmap to sobriety, but a foundation for a meaningful life.

Personalized, Not Prescribed

Our approach is never one-size-fits-all. Participation in 12 Step meetings and related activities is integrated thoughtfully into each client’s individualized treatment plan. We honor personal beliefs, cultural perspectives, and varying recovery experiences, always supporting each client’s autonomy and spiritual journey.

Community, Connection, and Commitment

12 Step programs offer something no clinical intervention can fully replicate: the lived experience of others who’ve walked the same path. The fellowship, accountability, and structure provided by programs like Alcoholics Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous, and others can be invaluable in building a sustainable life in recovery.
