A Safe Transition to Wellness

For many people, the journey to recovery begins with the need to safely withdraw from substances. The physical dependency that develops with prolonged substance use can make stopping not only physically uncomfortable, but potentially dangerous. At Borden Cottage, we understand the challenges people face with this critical first step. To meet those challenges, we’ve carefully designed our Withdrawal Management program to provide comfort, dignity, and expert medical care in a peaceful setting.

Most importantly, our Withdrawal Management facility is on-site, ensuring continuity of care from the very beginning of your recovery journey.

What is Withdrawal Management?

Withdrawal Management (sometimes called detox) is the medically supervised process of safely discontinuing substance use while minimizing the physical discomfort and potential health risks that can accompany this transition. Our private, on-site facility provides 24-hour nursing care where you can begin this process under expert medical supervision in a calm, supportive environment that prioritizes your comfort and dignity.

The Borden Cottage Difference

Unlike traditional hospital detox units or larger facilities where you might be one of many patients, our Withdrawal Management program embodies the personalization and compassionate care that are Borden Cottage hallmarks. Our Withdrawal Management setting is intentionally designed to be calming and comfortable—a sanctuary where you can begin the healing process. With capacity for just two residents at a time, we ensure you receive attentive, individualized care throughout this challenging but vital first step.

A Comfortable, Private Setting

Located adjacent to the main residence, Circle Cottage, our dedicated Withdrawal Management facility, offers a peaceful environment where you can begin your recovery journey with dignity. Circle Cottage feels more like a comfortable home than a medical facility. There you’ll experience:

  • A private bedroom with en-suite bathroom
  • A calming, quiet atmosphere
  • Beautiful views and surroundings to ease anxiety
  • Compassionate staff dedicated to your comfort and wellbeing
  • Individual attention with a maximum of two residents at a time

Expert Medical Care

Your safety is our highest priority. Our Withdrawal Management program is staffed 24 hours a day with registered nurses and overseen by our Medical Director. Our experienced team can effectively manage withdrawal from:

  • Alcohol
  • Benzodiazepines
  • Opioids
  • Stimulants

Each Withdrawal Management plan is tailored to your specific needs, with medications provided as appropriate to minimize discomfort and ensure safety. Throughout the process, you’ll receive compassionate support from our dedicated nursing staff who understand both the physical and emotional challenges of this transition.

Integration with Your Treatment Journey

Unlike facilities where detox and residential treatment are disconnected experiences, our Withdrawal Management program is fully integrated with Borden’s residential treatment. You’ll begin meeting with your therapist and our medical team while still in Withdrawal Management, creating a seamless transition to the next phase of your recovery.

This integrated approach means you won’t have to transfer between facilities, interrupting the continuity of care and potentially having to start over again with a new therapist. Instead, you’ll move just steps away to the main residence once medically stable, continuing your journey with the same team who already knows you and your needs.

What to Expect

Many people approach Withdrawal Management with anxiety about the process. At Borden Cottage, we strive to make this experience as comfortable as possible while providing complete transparency about what to expect.

When you arrive, our nursing team will conduct a thorough assessment of your physical health, substance use history, and any co-occurring medical or psychiatric conditions. Based on this assessment, our medical team will develop a personalized Withdrawal Management plan designed specifically for your needs.

Throughout your time in Withdrawal Management, you’ll receive:

  • Regular monitoring of vital signs and withdrawal symptoms
  • Medications as needed to manage withdrawal symptoms and ensure comfort
  • Nutritional support and hydration
  • Initial meetings with your therapist and psychiatrist
  • Education about the physical and psychological aspects of withdrawal
  • Compassionate emotional support from our dedicated staff

Additionally, as you begin to stabilize medically, we’ll gradually introduce you to therapeutic activities appropriate to your energy level and cognitive state. This might include art activities, values-based group exercises, or mindfulness practices.

The length of time spent in Withdrawal Management varies depending on the substance, duration of use, and individual factors, but typically ranges from 2-8 days. Our team will keep you informed throughout the process and work closely with you to determine when you’re ready to transition to the residential program.

A Gentle Beginning to Your Recovery Journey

At Borden Cottage, we view Withdrawal Management not simply as a medical responsibility, but as an opportunity to establish rapport from the very beginning, establishing the trust and relationships that will support your journey through the residential program. By providing a peaceful, supportive environment where you can safely navigate this challenging transition, we help you begin your recovery journey with dignity, comfort, and hope.
